La relazione con animali compagni e i Pet Cemeteries

Persone. Luoghi. Pratiche. Narrative. E il legame umani-animali. IN MEMORY si concentra su tutto questo, raccontando le storie delle persone con i loro compagni animali. Anche dopo che la morte li ha separati.

IN MEMORY tratta delle alchemiche relazioni che si instaurano fra gli animali d’affezione e le persone che con loro convivono. In particolare, nel tracciare le narrative che sostengono queste relazioni, si concentra sulla dimensione della memoria e sulle pratiche di commemorazione degli animali familiari dopo la loro morte e quindi, soprattutto, sul fenomeno crescente dei pet cemeteries.

Perché le relazioni non si interrompono in presenza della morte. Le affinità elettive non si spengono come candele nel buio. Chi resta cerca di farle sopravvivere, come può, a dispetto del dolore, del senso di perdita e di un cammino, nel futuro prossimo, fatto di assenza. La commemorazione di chi si ama e non c’è più è una di queste vie. Ed è di questi percorsi che vuole raccontare IN MEMORY.

PROGETTO IN MEMORY – STEP 1

Il progetto IN MEMORY è partito dalla creazione di una base documentale sul tema delle relazioni fra umani e animali, i cimiteri animali e i gesti di cura rivolti agli animali familiari, grazie alla raccolta di immagini, documenti storici, alla realizzazione di foto, videointerviste e filmati, attività che VARIANTI ha svolto anche con il sostegno del Fondo Audiovisivo della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, che selezionò il progetto IN MEMORY candidato ai Bandi Regionali del 2015.

PROGETTO IN MEMORY – STEP 2

Si avvia ora la seconda parte del progetto, che intende raccogliere e integrare immagini e filmati amatoriali nello storytelling e nella sceneggiatura del documentario. A tal fine VARIANTI lancia una call per ricevere foto e video riguardanti il tema della memoria degli animali familiari, i riti di commiato (riti funebri, formali o spontanei), i gesti di cura e i cimiteri/le sepolture degli animali. Chi volesse partecipare a questo progetto culturale può inviare alla mail di VARIANTI i video o le foto che ha realizzato in riferimento a questo tema, allegando la liberatoria che autorizza VARIANTI a utilizzarli. Ribadiamo che lo scopo di questo progetto è strettamente culturale, ed è volto a creare consapevolezza attorno al tema dei “gesti di cura” e delle “relazioni” fra umani e compagni animali. Se siete in sintonia con questo intento, mandateci i vostri materiali, li visioneremo molto volentieri e, se saranno in tema, saremo felici di renderli parte integrante del documentario! 

The Relationship with Companion Animals and the Pet Cemeteries Phenomenon

People. Places. Practices. Narratives. And the human – animal bond. IN MEMORY focuses on all that, telling people’s stories regarding their companion animals. Even after death has taken them apart.

The documentary addresses the topic of the human-animal bond from the perspective of the social phenomenon of “pet cemeteries”, and all that is associated with them: the practices, both social and private, that take place when people commemorate the animal companions they have lost, the narratives that surface during the grieving and in the process of handling memories and keeping the relationship alive, the way human-animal bonds even shape the landscape which surrounds us, taking the form of animal cemeteries.

Relationships do not end in the presence of death. Elective affinities do not extinguish like candles in the dark. Those who remain try to make them survive, as best they can, despite the pain, the sense of loss and mourning. The commemoration of someone you love and is no longer with you is one of these ways. And it is these paths that IN MEMORY wants to tell about.

PROJECT IN MEMORY – STEP 1

IN MEMORY project started with the creation of a documentary base on the topic of relationships between humans and animals, animal cemeteries and gestures of care towards family animals, thanks to the collection of images, historical documents, the realization of photos, video interviews and films, an activity that VARIANTI also carried out with the support of the Audiovisual Fund of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, which selected the IN MEMORY project nominated for the call.

PROJECT IN MEMORY – STEP 2

The second part of the project is now underway, which aims to collect and integrate images and amateur films into the storytelling and script of the documentary. To this end, VARIANTI launches a call to receive photos and videos regarding the theme of the memory of family animals, farewell rites (funeral rites, formal or spontaneous), gestures of care and cemeteries/burials of companion animals. Anyone wishing to participate in this cultural project can send the videos or photos they have taken in reference to this theme to VARIANTI's email, attaching the release authorizing VARIANTI to use them. We underline that the purpose of this project is strictly cultural, and is aimed at creating awareness around the theme of "gestures of care" and "relationships" between humans and animal companions. If you are in tune with this intent, we encourage you to send us your materials, we will be happy to view them and if they are on topic, we will be happy to make them an integral part of the documentary!
